Haley3 vs Vyros2, SR17: Spread the Net

1. Lists

I wanted to give a try to Keith Christianson’s (co-host of muse on minis) Haley3 list after he did really well at the lock and load masters of 2017, therefore I took it to a local tournament and played her exclusively.

The list is:

Cygnar Army – 75 / 75 points

(Haley 3) Major Prime Victoria Haley [+25]
– Charger [9]
– Grenadier [9]
– Grenadier [9]
Anastasia di Bray [3]
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist [4]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
– Charger [9]
Major Harrison Gibbs [4]
Ragman [4]
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt [8]
– Captain Jonas Murdoch [4]
Stormblade Infantry [10]
– Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard [5]
– Stormblade Infantry Storm Gunner (2) [4]
Trencher Infantry (min) [10]
– Trencher Infantry Rifle Grenadier (2) [4]

My opponent is playing some Vyros2 with a colossal, a mini-colossal, and 5 jacks:

Retribution Army – 74 / 75 points
[Theme] Forges of War

(Vyros 2) Vyros, Incissar of the Dawnguard [+27]
– Aspis [6]
– Griffon [8]
– Griffon [8]
– Griffon [8]
– Griffon [8]
– Helios [34]
– Imperatus [22]
Arcanist Mechanik [0(2)]
Arcanist Mechanik [0(2)]
House Shyeel Artificer [0(5)]
House Shyeel Arcanists [7]

I do not recall my opponent’s other list, my other list was Caine3 but I wanted to stress test Haley3, and I am positive that he can kill the Helios for sure.

2. Pre-Game Thoughts

I have played a similar matchup again, as long as I can keep focusing my fire on the big jacks and kill the colossal as soon as I can, I will be fine.

I usually have an arc-node to try to slam one jack backwards and dominate one forward, but this game is different, let’s see how it goes.

3. Game

Turn 0:

I win the roll to go first and I take it, either side is good for me because I have pathfinder on a stick with ghost walk. My opponent gives me the side with the forest in front which means that I can see his colossal but he cannot see my models.

Turn 1:

I am first, so everything goes forward. Haley calls her echos but there is no reason to put tactical supremacy out (Vyros and his jacks can see through clouds).

Trenchers go forward and dig in, jacks go forward and dig in. Stormblades run forward.

End of my turn 1

My opponent also runs his jacks forward out of threat range.

Turn 2:

I decide that I have to build a line for his jacks to come in and not kill all of my army. I cast arcane shield on the stormblades, ghost walk them with future Haley and run and minifeat them. Now they are armor 21 so he is going to have to put resources to kill them.

I put Anastasia on the flag, while having Gibbs close enough so that when she dies he can go up. This might have been a mistake but the idea is that if he sends a Griffon to kill Anastasia, it will not be killing stormblades, if he sends it to kill stormblades, I will score 1 point.

I keep my trenchers back and make the huge mistake of the game where I put Gorman and Ragman too forward, I didn’t see the 13″ threat from the Griffons, even though I knew about it.

End of my turn 2, I’m about to lose some things. But I will score 1CP with the charger on the right.

I didn’t take a picture of his follow up, so I made a diagram. I loose Anastasia, Ragman and Gorman, a couple of blades and one or two trenchers.

Scheme of how my opponent’s turn 2 ends. I score 1 CP, my opponent scores another.

Turn 3:

Is retaliation time! My opponent hasn’t feated, which is a huge advantage for me because I can kill 2 heavies and a colossal and don’t help Imperatus to come to me or get more shield guards in range.

I have Aiyanna blow a kiss to Helios, then I have all my range attacks go into it, I leave it in a couple of boxes and the junior comes up to finish it and casts Arcane shield on Haleys. When the dust settles, Future Haley is corporeal, Past Haley is incorporeal and I have made a huge mistake and Haley prime is slightly tilted because she couldn’t fit behind Aiyana.

Stormblades charge and kill two Griffons, I’m low on time so I do not even activate the trenchers, another mistake here.

End of my turn 3. I score two points, 3-1.

He realizes that has lost the attrition game and goes for an assassination, he has to over commit to making sure that synergy is high enough and forgets to cast easy rider.

He gets a warjack on Haley’s back and knocks her over, then buys an attack and puts 8 damage on her. Imperatus can’t get out of the rubble so cannot kill the knockdown Haley.

He runs a mechanic to contest my flag.

I score another point on my opponent’s turn, and runs a solo to the flag, 4-2.

Turn 4:

I can win by either killing Vyros, who is in front of Past Haley and a unit of Stormblades, or I can win by running a light warjack onto his zone. I went for the assassination, probably the wrong call but it does go off and I win the game. (I’m not a 100% sure of why couldn’t I just win on my zone and the flag, but I still just killed Vyros).

Cygnar wins!

4. Post-game

If my opponent had feated I would have been in a bad spot, Imperatus would have been too forward and Haley might have died.

This list is great, the amount of arm debuff it can apply is just really good.

I need to play this faster. If I had activated the trenchers, I could have blocked the path to Haley and put some damage on the two Griffons.
